View Full Version : Having a rotor in SA

Hey all,
It's been a number of years since I've had a rotor here in SA. Previously I've been lucky enough to have a number of them from RX4 13BT, RX2 sedan, and RX7 S3 13BT.
A couple of years ago I considered getting back into one, but the bullshit regarding laws and the fact that merely driving one is enough to get a defect deterred me.
I would like to know how things are now? I want to get back in to a RX4 Coupe, 13BT... Something nice... I miss the 'attitude'.
Realistically, is it even practical to consider such a thing now in SA? If I picked one up from interstate am I going to be able to get it registered?
And in regards to engineering, can I make this happen if I take this approach? Or am I doomed to being hassled and defected?
I've read the posts that exist regarding mods etc, but thought it best to ask how things are at the moment. Any advice you could give would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Brett
cops in sa are fkd........
frm wat ive been told engineering duznt stop you from being defected it just makes regency easier
bringing a car frm interstate i dnt think is a good idea either unless it is stock
but all in all owning a rotor nothing beats it and the above stuff shouldnt matter

i came from interstate with my FD and i only found out when i got here that i had to go through regency (cos it was rebuilt and had different engine number etc..). it was a pain in the ass and i had to return it to stock to pass. lucky jase from REVS was happy to help and let me borrow the parts. dont let that deter you though man you get awesome presence on the road with a rotor :)

I've had a loud N/A FC and now my FD, and never been stopped once by police.
Having said that, I don't daily drive the FD so it may be a different situation if I did.
At the end of the day, if your car isn't over the top and you don't act like an idiot to the cop (even if he starts to try and get you worked up) then most of the time you shouldn't have any issues.
but the bullshit regarding laws and the fact that merely driving one is enough to get a defect deterred me.
Rubbish. If you mean driving around at 120dba dumped on its arse with screamer pipe, then perhaps... If your car isn't over the top and you're not doing anything dumb, most of the time you will be fine.

Not trying to give you $hit in anyway, so don't take it as that, but modified cars and the police don't mix. Nothing has changed for the better in the 13 years i've owned rotaries. If this is a problem for you i suggest a nice ve commodore.
I hate thats the way it is, but for me, my passion for modified cars far outways the attention from the police. I'l take a defect over being a camry driver any day.
Also owning a rotary in south australia is guaranteed to get you laid by a member of the opposite sex. Ive had sex two times now and ive had 11 rotaries, a mate of mine has been laid four times now. They're good odds.
As corey said, posers will get harrassed-simple, you drive where the crowds are, the police will be there too. Theres no reason you can't modify a rotary within the limits of the law and have a ball but if your like me you always end up going way too far ;)
Oh and as far as advice on handling police, keep your mouth shut and take whats given to you as nothing you say, is suddenly going to make the officer realise what a prick they're being!!

i've never had any issues with mine. in fact i've only been pulled over once since owning an s14, an mr2, and the FC.
just don't go down to the bay, keep fast driving to the hills, and don't be a douche if a cop does pull you over.

I wouldn't let it deter you honestly, You can't help get pulled over by Jelous Cops.
Only had my FD for 4 Months and drive it every odd weekend if the weather permits, and I've been pulled over for a "Rendom Breath Test and Compliment" 85% of the time...
Just be polite and go with the flow, just make sure that your rubber is in good condition because that's all they will hassle you about (Most cops know nothing about Rotors. lol)

No it was stolen and burnt... :(
I have a 180sx now that I'm very happy with (sorry to say that - I still really want an FC) and the girls love it too ;)
I still love rotors and love cruising with them and i WILL own one again... :D
swap ya 180 for my fcs then lol

Sounds like someone was taking the revenge on you... over getting laid by their lovers may be? that's the danger of owning a rotor :D

the only problems i've had owning my Rx-8 was the police spending 15 minutes trying to find something wrong with it (baring in mind that i'm 20 and the car is stock) his words went something like "is this your car... ok hop out while I go over it, there HAS to be something illegal on here"
like everyone says... act dumb, do stupid stuff and you'll get some attention..
also... rotaries DO get you laid ;)
