View Full Version : Mazda LSD rebuild Issues

I would like to post a recent issue ive had with my lsd diff , as some of you know i have a s3 rx7 that i mainly use at mallala / hillclimbs.
I recently installed the 12a bp to find it was open wheeling around mallala quite badly and considering i have had this LSD for 4 years it was due for a freshen up.
After asking around i ended up using Duane from the ausrotary forum to rebuild the lsd and a 3rd party to rebuild the diff ( due to changed ratio ).
Upon the 1st test of breakaway torque it was way down ( like around 20lbs ) but it was more then less as it was being turned which prompted duane that there is an issue.
After he disassembled it there was an unusal set up with 2 missing clutch plates but 2 extra thrust washers .................to cut a long story short ...due to the low breakaway pressure it has also flogged out the spider gears which are nearly impossible to find ...as this diff was rebuilt by selectmaz and i thought the correct procedure would take place during the rebuild......but it was not to be.:frown:
Duane also pointed out discrepencies with the case also due to this set up( machined down case to increase breakaway pressure but did not work properly as noted )
So basically it never was a real lsd as such but it is hard to prove a poor rebuild other than the parts that were missing and doubling up after all this time.......
Now it is all rebuilt correctly and is on the way back from victoria with a number of pictures taken during the rebuild to show me the differences..
Although not installed into my 7 i am hopefull of a quieter and more positive engagement of the lsd which should = more corner speed and acceleration through the corners :)
More info soon....

interesting read, I'd be interested the difference between this and the torsen I have, what ratio are you running?

4.77 to 1 ratio....max acceleration :)

I would bet that my lsd was never checked over just found in a pile of parts and installed then billed as rebuild/checked lsd..clown....:fo:

Did you contact Selectmaz to let them know? I know it's been a while and you can be sure they'll say it's been too long, but worth a whinge.
yelloS2Rx7, I'd watch what you write. Didn't Selectmaz threaten legal action on AR years ago regarding something written about them? Pretty sure for a while no one was allowed to mention SM on their site!

Corey, please keep your opinion on workshops to yourself unless you are posting a specific FIRST HAND experience.

TORSEN diffs, under certain circumstances, send the power to the wheel with the least traction which can cause an open-wheeling diff feel. So, in a circuit situation this will generally be your inside wheel, causing wheelspin.
My FD has a TORSEN and because the chassis has been stiffened up over standard, when you drive up a driveway the inside rear wheel can lift off the ground, and you're essentially bogged on 3 wheels. It's happened to me before :) But, I didn't notice any of the inside wheel spin issues on the track in my car.
I have seen Brad's old PPG TORSEN spin the inside wheel on the track - however he's since moved to a 1.5way clutch LSD which does not suffer from this problem.

yes....but never got back to me until i stated that i was a local then spoke with them but it has been too long and blah blah blah.....again it is pretty had to determine but the set up was according to the rebuilder odd and is not the best practice but can be done ...i do not know why they did that in the 1st place.....
It is something to be weary of when buying stuff from workshops especially when what they say they are going to do or something that will do this or that and it is inferior or breaks , if there is an issue with stuff the cliet should be aware and make there own decisions Y/N ......I have learnt the hard way but thats how it goes sometimes....so now i am more knoweledgeable about mazda diffs.....

thanx for interfering again but
I'm talking from absolute first hand experience dude.......
And have a big lump of secect maz shit here to prove
Izzy is an out an out crook!!!!!!
Less than 1000 kms out of 2 centres
and the axles they supplied were in ridiculously bad nic
big angle grinder cuts under wheel bearings????
In the first build of the diff he admitted to using S/H bearings
which failed and then made me pay for new ones
Izzy does nothing but dodge calls
stand on his high horse promise the world
and never call back
untill u call pretending to be someone else, suddenly he's there....
Then promises the universe and never calls back...
CROOK CROOK CROOK
unless u call adel to victa and back the first one shit itself
izzy supposedly fixed it but at more cost to me
then the last SArotor cruise to cape jervis and half way back the diff started to shit itself again
2 small trips 2 rooted centres
enuf money wasted coulda got a hilux...
He's just full of lies!!!

Your post mentioned nothing about any issues you had, so how was anyone to know you weren't talking simply from hearsay? That's all the issue was.
Sounds like you certainly got the raw end of the deal with those diffs, I'm sorry to hear it.

It is interesting how corey has stated that the bearings used were initially 2nd hand as mine were also on the worn side!!! so i changed all of them to be safe ( had to change the ones on the lsd case as i had to use a different lsd case that wasnt machined down )

Diff`s in and a quick trip around the block showed no noticable noises at up to around 60km
So far so good.........!

Took it for a drive over the past few days and all it good ...i now have an LSD that works .....It does have slight gear noise at 70-90 km when you take your foot off the accelerator but the gear set was 2nd hand ( slight wear on the crownwheel by the looks of it )
So a good result overall......anyone that is handy with mechanics can do this themselves ( or with a few mates )
The diff guy is on the ausrotary forum ( nvspasnger ) his name is Duane....and a good honest guy to deal with rebuilding all mazda lsd centres from rx2`s to s5 rx7 possibly the s6 onwards.....

Second that. Duane is extremely helpfull.
Clued up well on mixing and matching diff components, ie 28 and 26 spline setups in RX2/3 diff housings and torsen centres, albiet a bit of work!

It is a pitty we need to go interstate sometimes for great results ........12a bp 152rwkw ..... diff rebuild ........so far so good...
