best mechanic i ever had was mark mills at madaz motorsport. he tuned my cosmo 13b which had cosmo secondarys as primaries and indy blue 1700cc as secondarys so well there was no jerk when secondarys kicked in. with all the work and after market products that were on the car it was impressive it never missed a beat. started every time, idled when cold, did a conservative tune to maximise reliability without losing out right power. when not on boost the car used bugger all fuel too. mind you he built the engine and advised me on alot of the parts to get so he knew the car inside and out. last i heard (which was just before i got my rx2) he wasnt on marion road anymore. Rumour had it that he closed his business down and went to work for someone else, but im not sure about it. if i could find him i'd bribe him to do all the engine work on my rx2 so if anyone knows anything about him, please pm his whereabouts for me.

as for dyno, initial tune was street tune with laptop as passenger and final tune was used on graham wests dyno i think.

microtech was all he installed so he knew them as well as tim possingham.

if someone posts where he is now highly recommended for anywork
now wheres my cheque for the plug!!!

Unfortunatley Mark has closed his business down. Apparently still doing some tuning for mates and working on some of the cars he has built.

yeah thanks, rota boy. i had heard that. a mate of mine told me as alot of us southerners had our cars built by him. i had also heard that he did work on cars he had built or friends cars. just hoping i still fit into that category!!
its hard picking the right workshop as everyone has heard horror storys of malpractice or at the other end of the scale its like "UH, A ROTARY, SORRY BUDDY WE DON"T WORK ON THEM" so this thread should help alot of people.

Mark is working back at S & J, where he worked before he opened up madaz. he might do stuff on the side but i don't know how to contact him other than through S & J.
I think he was having issues finding staff as he was running the workshop by himself for a while before he closed it down

i've used boostworx for my s14, mr2 and now my FC

Sean knows his rotors too :)

He raced a very quick S2 in Club for a while (he may still!)

On a personal note, he tuned my S4 after a tune from someone who is very well respected around the traps, and it was a different car.. 20KW more, much better response, better economy..

When I was looking for someone to check over my PP I was introduced to a young dude out north/east. Steve has been into rotors all his life. His dad was a Mazda mechanic starting back in the 60's and as I understand it was the first person in Australia to port a rotary.

Steve is an engine builder, a tuner, he is also big into the electrical side of things. He has an engine dyno that he uses to tune his FD drag car, he has a mill etc and does his own porting. He knows his shit and I was very happy to let him loose on my $10k plus 13B PP!!! He took what I already had, which was good and made it so much better. I am very happy with his work and the cost to do the job!!! Steve will also be doing my induction setup and the tuning of my car when it hits the road.

If anyone is keen to have a chat to him let me know and I can hook you up.

I mainly focus on anything aftermarket on rotaries whether it be ecu installs, hidden wiring, rebuilds, tuning and engine development and fabrication work.
But even if its a small job I can usually do it or point you in the right direction of who to go to and who not to.
Because its not my main job I don't have to push heaps of cars out to make a living which lets me take more time to make sure its done right.

There is no other place that we would trust our Cars with more then MRE, my man has a 13B Cosmo, HiFLo, LT8, bigger injectors, and otherstuff.... I dont know the full specs but he had his tuned there and it runs sweet with no problems. He would NEVER trust anyone else with his Rotors and other cars. He even had a S5 13BT with low compression get tuned there with no problems. The best thing at MRE is that they really look after you and your car.
You dont just get service if your handing over a wad of cash, you get great service even if its for a little question like I always have, or advise on items for your car.
MRE have always been there for us and we will recommend them to any car lover wanting great and reliable service. :)

I used to get all my work done by mark mills aswell for my last 12a turbo series 2 rx7 and he built/tuned my engine for the FC etc.

I'm going back to MRE now since there's not much close to the southern area and they're service was good last time i used them. MRE (greg) also tuned my old Capella 12a ep with 48mm IDA setup. came out with 89kw original tune then 92kw on the 2nd tune 5 years later in my brothers car after i sold him the engine! Had the 12a built by jukes when JRE was open on port road.

I agree, Mark Mills has to be the greatest i just had him tune my rx7 with everything that was done to it and now its awesome to drive. i heard some stories about his engine builds and it amazing what he can do eg, 10second ke30 with a 13b turbo which he owned. neways mark has closed down madaz and now works for the scooby doo place s and j automotive i think in edwardstown, near castle plaza, near asv (dave is very good aswell with intercooler kits). mark is working from home with any rotors so just give him a call and see if he can help u. hes the best in adelaide ive heard.

well im not sure how it is now but a few years back now i got screwed over by Jason at mildrens and so did about 4 other people i knew.
Likes to charge big, talk a lot of crap.
I got a QUOTE to drop my engine in, dyno'd all up and running, I supplied the engine and 90% of the parts, Jason would call me telling me i would need this and that part an he could get it, But at his cost $$$ (too much) so i sourced my own parts (Think he was trying to make money off that too)
When the car was finished i was told to come an pick it up, i had my cash and was really excited but when i got to the counter he told me it was gonna cost me another $2400 on top of the already quoted price. I was young & dumb I had to go to the bank and get a loan to pay it.

when i started it the thing ran so bad, spitting flames out the back and poor idling, I asked Jason for the dyno readout to see if it was tuned, he told me the printer was broken??? I still was charged three hundred and somethin dollars though.I He said just run it in a bit it will be ok, I ran it for 5 minutes and the turbo manifold started smoking, so i said to put on a new gasket. Two days later i picked it up took it home on a trailer and drove it into my shed and it was doing the same thing in the same spot, they never did a thing! I also found my indicators and light wires had been cut??

Lesson learned and i will never return to Mildrens, I have met a lot a lot of rotary enthusiasts and will tell them never to go there either.

Though everytime i went to mildrens for anything i always found them more expensive but they've been around for ever and have a name and rep. Jason, that was always on the counter at mildrens, is a top bloke!!
Always helpful, gave me good prices...
Always has the time to say hi and is interested in ya builds etc!!
The problem with busy buisnesses and dealing with cars
is cars break, for many reasons, usually from constant nagging abuse...
The more cars u deal with the more chance u have of problems
whether it's a faulty batch of spark plugs, or leaving a bolt loose...
( seeing old man tillbrook throw champion sparkplugs out the door box after box was classic)
Whe worst part is u normaly only hear about the few bad experiences
not the many quietly obviously satisfied customers, that keep established buisnesses goin
places don't stay in buisness for as long as Mildrens if they're not doin sumthin right!!!
and don't expect specialist buisnesses to be profix cheap either!!!
Greg knows how to charge, but that's buisness!!!
Just make an informed decision, do your research, speak to a few ppl
that's why I try to do everything myself!!!!
what I can't do I only trust alex@Injectmaz, Tim Possingham, Corey@fisher perf exh

capella re

places don't stay in buisness for as long as Mildrens if they're not doin sumthin right!!!

alot of things i could say but i bite my tounge on the topic.
like corey said, do your homework. ring around at all the workshops listed in this thread to get an idea of what your in for. if someones too cheap to be true chances are the quotes going to change before the jobs finished. if you do your homework properly it'll make it alot easier to sort the relevant from the bullshit before you get ripped.

you learn from mistakes, its just how much it costs you before you learn!!!

I've been careful too, Greg has a good reputation as do a number of workshops in adelaide, but they're all businesses, they're out to make money. If they aren't making money and being profitable they won't be around long, if they charge too much people will vote with their feet and go elsewhere. There's a happy medium and it's hard to manage.

In this game there's never going to be a 100% strike rate for happy customers, but there's also alot of unreasonable people, internet warriors and dreamers out there. You can't do it/supply something for free, and can't warranty work without charging accordingly. If you've had a bad experience, fine, I think we all have, but it's a small community, don't piss in a very small pond..

Clint is rx3rotorhead on Ausrotary so give him a pm or you could get his number from Ryan (Flex) as he had his car tuned there. I dont think he has his own workshop but uses one on Bremen Drive Salisbury South (Alltech Motor Services) he would more than likley be tuning this morning so just listen out for the rotor on the dyno if you go for a drive. Been thinking I may give him a go at tuning next time.

Also for everyone else Troy is no longer full time at Mildrens but gets the call up if he is wanted to do a tune. But they have a new bloke that I met last week his name is Chris and used to work at Mazda. He seems like a nice guy. Darryl said that he is a good tuner and very enthusiastic about rotors as he loves them. He even has the old RPM dyno at his house so he can just go and dick around on it anytime :)
Wish Jason was still there tho as it's just not the same with Greg behind the counter... Grumpy Greg lol. I think he needed to clone Jason or something. Even got thrown a few freebies from Jase when he was there top bloke!!! Might have to go and hit him up for some semi slicks soon.
