not happy with just one thread now you want multiple threads!!! coming along nicely now man. i think you'll be happier with a more responsive turbo especially considering where you now live. good to see your doing alot yourself, getting practice in before you do mine, good thinking!!
that surge tank looks killer too and i'm sure you got a crap load better value for money coming from another member. good having it all in one, very neat.
really going to be a monster when you get it sorted. cant wait :)
pm me where you got gate and turbo (or text me), they look new!!

bundy tubing can be bought in rolls (or lengths?) from ABS stores i think. I'd try this one if any would have it.

185 Grange Rd,
Findon South Australia 5023

just give them a call first 8347 2688

lol its very fun just b carefull bending it up around the rear sub frame i would stop short and use braid to do the loop over the sub frame onto the pumps

jesse_RE
15-02-2011, 06:23 AM
I used a coat hanger and bent it into shape as a trial fit around the diff area, i thought the same thing about stopping short and using hose, its a tight fit up there. Thanks for the tip though.

that surge tank and turbo look pretty, wen u gonna hav it all installled?? Thanks man, credit to danny (FC3S) for the tank, its all painted black now. not sure how long till its done, still gathering parts etc. got most things now.

may aswell update the thread while i'm here...

Got all my gaskets from Mazda now, managed to get some 2nd hand series 4 turbo fuel rails, ground the casting down to make the ends smooth, got some speedflow adaptors for them now. All manifolds are stripped down ready for paint. need to make up a blank off for the upper intake manifold where the BAC used to be, modified my throttle body yesterday, i'll post some pics up soon, this is what i did here: http://fc3spro.com/TECH/HOWTO/TBM/tbm.html

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/3149/turbo006.jpg
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3372/turbo008.jpg

Used loctite but changed my mind and ended up using Devcon to seal the plug in there permanently

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/7011/turbo009.jpg

Quick lick of paint..

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/5630/parts006d.jpg

Got fuel lines bent to shape, just need to mount them and attach the flare nuts (not as easy as i thought!!!) bought myself a double flare tool kit the other day.

still got a few things to do...

jesse_RE

Hard lines are done now. Braided hose and hose ends should all be in tomorrow. I'll be using hose over the sub frame to the surge tank.

Fitted the MMR engine and box mounts aswell.

Got some more bits coming. waiting on my sard pressure reg to be released from customs. Pulled water pump and housing off for painting and to tap out a few threads etc.

Got a question for the guys with aftermarket turbos, are you using the factory coolant feed from the LIM or getting it from elsewhere? I've made up a plate to tap a thread into so i can use braided hose with JIC fittings. Just interested to know..

21-04-2011, 08:46 AM
Yep i've got the housing off now, was gonna do that aswell as tap the bottom one by the bottom hose spout. I'm planning on running coolant through the Tial gate aswell, would i be better off using the stock LIM outlet and the spout one at the top of the rear end plate or blocking them and running a T piece in the turbo water lines?

use the rear plate for the gate then T them both bac into the same return

Only thing I would be a bit suss on is those little EARLS filters you got in there. Outlaws tried to sell me one of them when I was looking for filters but then I looked them up and said not for EFI use, I reckon they might be a bit small as well, I dunno mate have a suss though but I would be a bit wary of them......

Thanks man, Radiator took 2 weeks, cheapest place i found it was through banzai racing, there are cheaper versions out there through corksport and a couple other sites. I've got holidays coming up next week so hoping to get stuck into it. main focus is just getting it running then worry about all the other stuff. I should have got more "floating floor boards" lol the sheet i got from bunnings is perfect fit for the car but i need a bit more. easier to slide under the car with lino.

Also set up an isolator switch in the cigarrette lighter hole... Used a bracket to keep it still and some sikaflex.

Kept the orange light lense to keep it looking pretty and the narva iso switch fit nice and snug in it.

Had a fuel leak which only appeared once i'd had it running so should get that sorted this week, apart from that no other major issues. pretty stoked.

Over tightened AN fittings I bet? Looking good mate!No all the fittings were fine, just a porous weld. It was in a tricky spot but its all sorted now.

So got the car back from Boostworx yesterday, I'm pretty happy with it. Made 285.2kw on 17psi. (pump fuel 98) Goes really well with the GT3582, really good smooth power delivery and comes on boost nice and early with very minimal lag. Super happy with the turbo choice. When i find my camera cable i'll get some pics up.

Unfortunately i didnt get any dyno pics or vid as i thought it was getting tuned monday but Shaun did the exhaust aswell so ran out of time.

Really happy with his work though and charged me a very good price i thought.

madd as, are you going to track it more often? Yeah man, pretty keen to start doing some events like time attack and hill climbs etc... When its not broken...

Gearbox let go last night. Just a bearing or a synchro maybe? drove home on 2nd and 3rd. wont select 1st and grinds pretty hard while driving. Might look into getting it rebuilt with straight cuts. **edit no i wont lol crazy expensive for straight cuts!!** otherwise i'll just put an import box in to get it running again.

Must have broke something at mallala...

Can anyone recommend a good place to rebuild a gearbox?

About 4/5 years ago i asked jason at MRE what it was worth to rebuild a s5 turbo box, he quoted over 1k in parts and labour. Buy a secondhand box.

Good blokes but they are expensive. I'm sure i can get it done cheaper elsewhere. Only needs bearings and maybe 1st gear hub and springs etc. wont know till its pulled down though. 2nd hand boxes are going for $500-$750 depending whats available.

I'll have a look when I'm at work tomorrow I might be able to get the parts for you, but I reckon I did look into it briefly and didn't have a supplier. S4 or 5 box?

Series 5 box, thanks for the kind offer but i also work in the motor trade so i can probably get them at a similar price as what you can. You can check anyway if you like as a comparison. I'm looking into genuine parts just to see what they are worth aswell.

Actually I had a look about today, no one offered a rebuild "kit" as such, was pretty difficult to find much at all. I'd probably have a look at genuine as well, but i'd also see that madzatrix can do I think I've seen some gear on there a while ago.

Hey guys, been a few months since last update. I rebuilt my gearbox myself. Its all working and i've done about 400km with it. I did a build thread on ausrotary so some have seen it.

more prep work for the next track day, installed a sump baffle to help with oil sloshing up the breather tubes. will see how it goes next week!
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg594/scaled.php?server=594&filename=imag0176m.jpg&res=medium

Had to cut a "L" shaped slit to clear the stock internal baffle for the oil cooler fitting

Installed without the sump

Still got to do a few things, got next week off work :D

Yeah, sorry for interrupting you Sunday, my bad! Could you get your sump off without raising the motor, can't remember with mine. Are you taking your FC on Sunday or getting a lift with lincoln or something? Is 5th gear still playing up or has it sorted itself? You must be running out of stuff to mod I reckon, your as bad as Binnzy!

Jesse... Good work mate ;o) does the new baffle come with studs? Or is that something you've done?

Ah now I get why you needed 2 gaskets. Interesting idea I've only really seen baffles welded inside sumps before. Mind you I've only had piston engine experience.

Did the spring sort 5th gear?

Hey Simon, Yep i used an engine crane to lift the engine to get clearance for the front bolts in the timing cover. yeah hoping to take the FC out on Sunday for Mt alma. 5th gear still jumps out. Bought a new detent spring from Kevin (Silhouette), thats one of the things on the 'things to do' list. Its an easy access thing to get to under the car so no big deal. Hope it fixes the problem though otherwise it might be that the 5th gear selector fork is too badly worn and not selecting properly which is a gearbox out job. Nah i think Binnzy might be worse than me :D lol

Jesse... Good work mate ;o) does the new baffle come with studs? Or is that something you've done? Hey mate, bought the baffle off Ebay, Got the grub screws and nuts from Coventry fastners. If you want a set let me know, i have a contact there and he knows all the codes and sizes etc.

Did the spring sort 5th gear?Hey Kevin, I didnt end up using the gaskets in the end, every one i spoke to who had previously done the same job said to use sealant. The Toyota genuine sump sealant is serious stuff so i used that. No leaks ;) Havent got around to fitting the spring yet

On Sunday i discovered that i hate cars, gearbox shat a bearing on the way to mt alma. Pulled the box out today, looks like its the counter shaft front bearing, dont know why it failed but i'll have to pull it down again anyway to see why.

Got a 2nd hand box of a mate thanks to Lincoln, spent some time today re-sealing it because it leaked where the casings join but got it in, still have to put a few things back together but looks like i'm still good for Thursday. ;) Also found out that my heater box is leaking in the cabin so i'll have to bypass it for now. Some days i just want to set fire to my car and burn it to the ground.

That sucks man, box out again. I'd be pissed as too. As long as Thursday goes sweet, you'll get your mojo back. I left my heater box disconnected too, only sucked in winter. When did it go wrong? Obviously still drivable to get you home. Is it a too much power issue so you need an upgraded box or pure mechanical failure.

Hey man, today went pretty well apart from the heat and oil temps were high. With the box I'm not sure exactly what went wrong but definitely a failed front counter shaft bearing as far as I can tell. Probably too much power or maybe just a shit bearing? Will pull it down and see when I get some more spare time.

Might be time for a Gearbox upgrade...the S4/5/6 gearboxes can only handle so much torque then they have issues.

Michael...

Michael... yeah I have thought about an upgrade but I've got a couple spare ones now so I think I'll rebuild them for now. Some people seem to have no problems with fc boxes..? Maybe they aren't driving them hard enough?

Also for those interested, the sump baffle made a noticible difference to the amount of blow by from last time.
