Mikko Hirvonen wins Rally Poland

POLAND 28th June 2009 - BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team driver Mikko Hirvonen has won his second consecutive WRC event by claiming victory on the brand new Rally Poland, round eight of the World Rally Championship.
http://www.australiancardirectory.com.au/upl_images/A_WRC%20Poland_1b.jpg
The momentous win, the ninth of his career, promoted Hirvonen, 28, into the lead of the drivers' championship standings with a one point lead over Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb; the man who has won the title for the last five years.
In blazing sunshine, and in front of thousands of spectators, Hirvonen completed the rally closing Super Special without a hitch and drove his Ford Focus onto the finish podium with a winning margin of 1min 10.3sec.
But just as Hirvonen was sealing victory on the final 2.5km head-to-head stage, his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala - on course to complete a one-two victory for Ford - was throwing it all away.
In an almost unbelievable twist of fate, Latvala clipped a sand barrel on the apex of a corner and broke the right-hand steering arm of his Ford Focus. At the next corner his car speared into a metal barrier - wrecking its suspension and getting stuck fast. After a frenzied effort to get the car free again a distraught Latvala and his co-driver Miikka Anttila eventually resorted to pushing it. Retirement came shortly after.
The drama handed second place to Citroen Total team driver Dani Sordo who, despite a determined attack through Saturday morning's stages, had looked all but certain of third place today. In the event, that place went to Henning Solberg of the Stobart VK M-Sport team.
Hirvonen held the lead of the rally since Friday's second stage when he snatched the position from Loeb. However, any chance of an ongoing battle with his rival evaporated on the very next stage when the Frenchman retired after hitting a tree stump.
Watching from the finish line as Latvala's drama played out in front of him, Hirvonen was totally stunned. "I can't believe what I'm seeing," he said.
Later, Hirvonen gave a fuller account of his feelings. "For me it was a fantastic rally from start to finish," he said. "When Sebastien made his mistake on Friday, I thought it would be a good. Sordo pushed us harder than we expected on Saturday but on these roads I really enjoyed the fight. Okay, despite Jari's mistake we're still in the lead of the drivers' championship by one point, and this is the first time I've ever won two WRC rallies in a row, so that feels good. Now I want to make it three in a row on my home rally in Finland."
"I still don't really know what to say about Jari-Matti," he added. "It's definitely something you wouldn't expect to happen. It came at a really, really bad time. There was no pressure on him but mistakes do happen."
Dani Sordo was happy with his unexpected last minute promotion. "Third place was not bad, now second is better but I'm really disappointed for Jari-Matti," he said. "The rally has been a good for me. Yesterday I tried to pressure the guys ahead but on the second passes my speed wasn't there. I will try and work on the situation before Finland. I have a test planned before the rally and I will try something different in the car to give me more confidence."
Latvala's last stage catastrophe and eight points for Sordo was a huge disappointment for Ford in the manufacturers' contest. A maximum 18 points would have pulled the squad to within six points of Citroen. Instead Citroen head to Finland 17 points ahead.
After finding his best form on the rally's final day, Henning Solberg was delighted to bring his Ford home in a podium place. "Wow, what an end to the rally," he said. "I've been struggling with the feeling but today it came much better. Now I'm really looking forward to Finland; that will be my rally. I will have the right pace on Friday there."
Petter Solberg was fourth in his 2006 specification Xsara and felt his place relative to the other drivers' cars was about right. "I have to be realistic; this is the best result I could get," he said. "Earlier in the event Ogier and Henning should have been beating me, so to keep up with them in this old girl isn't bad. Maybe we would have done better without the oil on the screen today, I don't know."
Briton Matthew Wilson brought his Stobart Team Ford Focus home in fifth. "It's been tough but enjoyable; the stages here are awesome," he said. "Getting consistency in the pace notes is tough, but it’s been really good preparation for Finland and it will be a help to have had three days driving at these speeds. We took it steadier today but this afternoon we had to push because Holowczyc was getting a bit too close."
Sure enough, the Stobart team's Polish guest driver Krzysztof Holowczyc finished sixth to become the first Pole to score points in the World Rally Championship. A three-time winner of Rally Poland, most recently in 2005, Holowczyc said he had enjoyed himself at the wheel of his Ford Focus.
"I was last in a World Rally Car five years ago and it's amazing how they’ve changed!" he said. "It’s been a fantastic rally and this is my best WRC finish ever - which was a big surprise at the end. I have to thank the fans, I have never seen so many people and flags and their energy and the atmosphere has really helped me along."
After his Citroen-assisted salvage job today Sebastien Loeb brought his C4 to the finish in seventh to collect two drivers' points and four for Citroen in the manufacturers' championship. "It's better than nothing," he shrugged. "Even one point could be very important so I'm happy to take them. This has been a rally to forget for me. I hope it will be much better next time."
Citroen Junior Team driver Conrad Rautenbach finished eighth to take the last drivers' championship point.

Mikko Hirvonen wins in Finland

FINLAND 2nd August 2009 - BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team driver Mikko Hirvonen fulfilled a childhood dream by winning his native Rally Finland. Hirvonen and co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen won the legendary rally by 25.1sec in their BP Ultimate branded Ford Focus RS World Rally Car.

The result extends their lead in the FIA World Rally Championship to three points with three rounds remaining, including the next event, Rally Australia on the far north coast of New South Wales on 3-6 September. It was Hirvonen's third straight rally win and the BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team's fourth consecutive victory of the 2009 season after wins in Sardinia (Italy), Greece and Poland.

Team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila joined their fellow Finns on the podium by claiming third in their Focus RS WRC. Latvala fought off a severe stomach upset on Saturday to claim his maiden podium on his home rally. The results enabled the BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team to close the gap on the leaders in the manufacturers' world title fight to 14 points.

Rally Finland, round nine in the 12-event World Rally Championship, is the fastest rally in the series. Famous for its awesome roller-coaster jumps, Latvala topped the speed chart by winning the penultimate special stage at a remarkable average of 131.56kph. Few of the 23 gravel speed tests covering 345.15km fell below a 120kph average and even when heavy rain fell during the second leg, speeds remained high as the rock hard road surface softened to provide even better grip.

Hirvonen, who celebrated his 29th birthday during the first leg on Friday, added his name to the illustrious list of drivers who have mastered the sport's truest test of precision driving and bravery by leading for all but the first couple of kilometres. He steadily pulled away from closest rival Sébastien Loeb and when the Frenchman damaged a tyre on Saturday afternoon, Hirvonen was able to measure his pace, reduce the risks and take an emotional victory in front of his family and friends.

Latvala held fourth for most of the opening leg but his chances of improving looked slim when a stomach upset left him drained of energy on Saturday morning and unable to drive at full speed. However, the 24-year-old quickly recovered and as his health improved, so did his stage times. He received the ideal tonic by climbing into third during the afternoon and maintained a fast but cautious pace for the rest of the rally to secure a podium place by 16.2sec.
What Mikko Hirvonen had to say:

"I've watched this rally since I was a kid and now I have won here myself and joined so many of the sport's legends who have won here. It's such a fantastic sensation to win my home rally that I can't put my feelings into words. It has been such a great weekend for the BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team. I felt in control throughout the rally. It was a great battle with Loeb and when he had a problem, I could afford to take it a little bit easier."
What Jari-Matti Latvala had to say:

"It's one of the highlights of my career to finish on the podium on my home rally. After my mistake on the final stage in Poland last month, I was under the biggest pressure of my life here and it took time to regain my rhythm and confidence. Then I fell ill, but overtaking Dani Sordo to move into third was a turning point and my times became better and better. I feel I have grown up mentally since Poland and my role for the rest of the season is to support Mikko's drivers' title challenge in the way I did here."
Next round

Rally Australia returns to the series for the first time since 2006 next month. The new-look rally has crossed the country from Perth to the east coast and is based in Kingscliff, New South Wales on 3 - 6 September.

AUSTRALIA 6th Sept 2009 - FORD driver Mikko Hirvonen has extended his lead in the World Rally Championship after a stewards’ decision demoted Citroen’s Sebastien Loeb to second place, almost six hours after the official finish of Repco Rally Australia today.
http://www.australiancardirectory.com.au/upl_images/A_WRC%20Aussie_1b.jpg
Loeb had been declared the winner, but tonight the stewards imposed a one-minute penalty on the time of the 1# Citroen after finding it had front suspension parts that did not comply with the homologation records for the car.

They imposed the same penalty on the Citroen C4 WRCs of teammate Dani Sordo and Citroen Junior team driver Sebastien Ogier after the team verified they also had the same parts, described as front anti-roll bar links that were longer and required additional notches.

The Citroen team did not appeal the decision.

The decision had the effect of reversing the original 1-2 finishing positions and, instead of Hirvonen leading Loeb by one point in the Drivers’ standing, he now has a five-point break with just two rounds remaining in the 2009 FIA WRC.

Sordo remains in third, but Ogier surrendered fourth place to Hirvonen’s BP Ford Abu Dhabi teammate Jari-Matti Latvala.

Seat Press Release:

Once again, SEAT will be the official car of the Rally RACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada, the eleventh round of the World Rally Championship being held from 1 to 4 October on roads in the province of Tarragona. SEAT has been actively collaborating with the organisation for the last 18 years since the rally became a competition on the WRC schedule. This year, SEAT is providing race organiser RACC with 86 cars to assist with the coordination of the race.
Spectators at each of the eighteen stages that make up the three legs can admire SEAT’s three newest launches as they drive by. These take to the track as the ’zero’ cars making the round of the stages prior to the race competitors in order to verify the safety measures of the road and that the spectators are in a safe viewing position.

Once the course is closed to traffic, the first car making its appearance will be a 200 hp SEAT Exeo TSI as the 000 (triple zero) car. Sebastien Loeb snatched the World Rally Championship by a single point at the weekend in a dramatic final rally of the season in Wales. http://www.australiancardirectory.com.au/upl_images/A_Loeb%20Champ%202009_1b.jpg
Starting the Rally of Great Britain a point behind Mikko Hirvonen, Loeb held his nerve to lead from start to finish to secure a famous victory, his 54th overall, and a historic sixth consecutive World Rally Championship Drivers’ title.
Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena’s triumph, their seventh of the season, capped off a successful year for the Citroën Total World Rally Team who wrapped up the Manufacturers’ title at the penultimate rally in Spain three weeks ago.
Sébastien Loeb commented, “There was so much pressure right up to the end of the rally. It’s never easy to compare one title with another, but I think this is the best one in terms of the sporting battle we had. This was the final rally and we couldn’t afford to get it wrong. Everybody expected us to win, but I can tell you that nothing was certain until we reached the finish.”
Dani Sordo, who took third place in Wales and third overall in the 2009 World Rally Championship commented, “When we got to within nine tenths of Mikko in the penultimate stage, we told ourselves we had to give it a go and we pushed to the limit. We believed we could do it, but he managed to hold out. I’m satisfied with a third-place finish in the championship, and that I made a real contribution to Citroëns’s success. We’ve had another very good season.
Citroën UK’s Managing Director, Gary Savage, commented, "Three weeks after winning the Manufacturers’ title, we’ve rounded off this extraordinary season with the Drivers’ title too. As we celebrate Citroën’s 90th anniversary year we now have the best team and best driver and co-driver in the World Rally Championship. Rallying fits perfectly with Citroën’s strategy; it’s an integral part of the brand’s DNA and we are already looking forward to 2010 where we hope to secure a sixth constructors title for Citroën and a seventh consecutive title for Sébastien.”
