I'm thinking of getting a good setup on my FD when my wheels arrive. i'll be looking to get a suspension setup that's great for street use as well as the occasional track day when my car is ready. can anyone recommend somewhere great, preferrably northern area

yelloS2Rx7
21-07-2009, 08:21 PM
depends what ya do with the car...
if its a daily, or a weekender
If ya have a crazy driveway, if you care if its defectable????
what some ppl say is too harsh is fine by others too...
Adj coilovers can be both cheap and expensive, and depending on ya situation pointless
sometimes just a quality adj shock eg Koni/Bilstien and the right spring is the best way to go, send me a pm, Ill try help as much as i can

yelloS2Rx7

as a matter of interest, I recently solved a mystery height problem
dealt with a FC which problem was being too high at rear with adj koni struts fitted
after research turns out Koni had done the spring platforns 35mm too high
noone but me noticed!!!

I've already got Coilovers, front and rear strut braces fitted. I have KU36 tyres waiting for wheels. the car is mostly a weekender these days and i'm hoping for the occasional track day. i just want a good setup in regards to camber, castor etc... that wont kill my tyres too quick but will still be sharp and grippy when on track. is that even possible or do i just want too much at once?

I have a problem with Rear Toe in and mad negative Camber on my Aussie NA s4 FC.

Although it looks great, its not ideal (I know, considering the rear suspension/control arm setup, that this is a natural thing and aids cornering, but I think it is causing tyre wear).

Is there a kit that can be installed to rectify this?

I have slightly wider tyres, 17" rims, and Pedders Sports rider springs and shocks (still legal height).

It has also got a "rattly" bumpy ride too?

Where abouts is your workshop in case i need to bring it in...

Cheers, ERIN

yelloS2Rx7
22-07-2009, 04:16 PM
mad neg camber eh????
bugger!!!!
with mad neg camber ya need toe in to compensate for the camber
thats the only wasy to get a IRS VN-VZ commy to wear rear tyres half well
toe out with neg camber will trash tyres!!!!!!
there are some offset bushes available....KMAC/Whiteline etc
workshop is in prospect...feel free to come say hi and gimme a quick look
the FC has passive steer bushes in the rear that induce toe in/toe out under certain conditions
maybe theyre stuffed/worn causing issues too???? hard to say without seein it...
rattly/bumpy ride??? normally pedders stuff is good ride????

I might swing past one day to get it looked at, be better to take it to someone who is familiar with these set ups, rather than back to pedders.
Do I need a booking? Do I just call the number in a few posts back?
Whats the name of the joint, is it the tyre joint next to the park, i think i have seen your car on the hoists there when i used to work at Adelaide City Jeep.

Corey,

Went to mallala today and while it was blowing a gale i managed to drop around a half a second off my previous lap time.

It did understeer a little through the southern and esses but the other corners were okay.

Will the following contribute to lessing the understeer--

toe out
soften the front shock off
Front tyre pressure increase ( did that today but only marginally helped )
Stiffen rear shocks
OR reinstall the rear sway bar :D

Thanks...

miket

Any advice Corey....

yelloS2Rx7
19-08-2009, 05:17 PM
half a second not a bad for a wheel alignment!!!!!
maybe we should try minimal toe out....
and reinstall ya rear swaybar hahahahaha
and maybe slightly soften fronts, at least u can do that at the track to see difference
imagine what some 8 in rims would do too.....

miket
20-08-2009, 05:51 PM
Thanks Corey.

They are only 6 in rims so even 7in would be fine.

might try the rear bar with soft link bushes and leave the front shock setting as is, if it over steers i can increase the shock setting at the front ;) and decrease the rears....

Only prob is we do not have much time in between races to muck around with the car as we are now getting 4 races + the practice vs 3 races + practice.

Might leave the alignment as is and try the bar and settings first.......

Michael....

yelloS2Rx7
21-08-2009, 02:24 PM
yeah give the settings a try first too i reckon,
youre definately on the right plan of attack though!!!!
cant wait to hear how you get on and the how the improvements go
Im sooooo tempted to buy ya konis, are they shortened stroke, will they run 3in lowered??

miket
21-08-2009, 07:05 PM
They are not short stroke shocks just valved for high spring rates which costs a fortune.

I was told not to go more than 1.25 inch lower than std height so that is as far as i went.

Really Low looks good but handles poorly ....trust me on that?

Michael....

yelloS2Rx7
22-08-2009, 10:25 AM
ill be reengineering my suspn to allow me to run 3in low :)

miket
22-08-2009, 10:57 AM
:annoyed:

Instal hydraulic suspension while you are there ...make it bounce.....

Michael...

yelloS2Rx7
22-08-2009, 12:57 PM
nah 3in lower is better!!!!
at the spring rates i wanna run it will bounce abit anyway
just gotta reengineer the factory bugs/geometry, so it works again at that height!!!!!!
coilovers, bump steer adjusters, 3 link/upper arm/panhard, $$$$ done!!!!!
looks like i can afford to order some stuff from the US soon, wooo hoooo!!!!!!
hey mark the other guy here at work has 16x7 and 16x8, 4/114.3 wheels
he duznt wanna sell them but hes happy to let ya throw them on ya car to sus out fitments offsets etc.....
for the money ya will never beat the performance increase goin wider in rims and tyres

miket
22-08-2009, 10:59 PM
Thanks Corey ...I have a set of 16 x 7 bsa rims that are a perfect fit I am contemplating using them with a set of either 195/50 r16, 205/45r16 or 215/45r16 semi slicks.

The reason i have not purchased any in that size is because they are $350+ each.

That way i am only using the one set of rims and eliminates changing rims over for track and street.

Or swap them for 15 x 7 rims with +38mm offset .....:smiley1: It may be hard to find the rims in that offset as most of them seem to be +20 or so.

Michael...

FLEX
23-08-2009, 08:20 PM
Thats all well and good provided you dont do a whole heap of k's on the road, otherwise the semi slicks wont last to long

miket
23-08-2009, 09:02 PM
I don't drive on the road to often these days as I use it more so for mallala super sprints when i can so semi slicks are all good.

NEWS:
we have just become the sole distributor for Yokohama ADVAN Racing wheels
and the new Yokohama ADVAN NEOVA tyres, which are a street/race/drift tyre
many D1 teams run NEOVAS,
cheaper and much better mileage than A048s almost as good grip
and best thing is theyre stealth and look like a normal directional tyre,
ya can drive on them daily and have the performance of a real race tyre!!!!!!!!!
theyre absolutely legal and are the OEM tyre on a few cars like the Lotus Exige
until now they were only avail in 2 sizes, but the entire range is finally now DOT approved

Hey Corey,

I installed the std rear bar and while going through the hills it seemed a little more stable in the rear but i wasn`t going heaps fast.

I did take a hair pin corner and with all the little bumps in the way it did not step out , in actual fact was not as saggy as before going through the same corner.

See what happens at mallala next month...

Corey,

Rear bar worked a treat dropped another second off my lap times , still waiting for the last race of the day time slip but i did a 1min 28.1 down from 1 min 29.01

It still undesteered but no where near as much as before, I could of adjusted the front shocks down a notch but I was still getting use to the new characteristics of the car.

Giving it a break for a while so I can install a 13b bp so I will come and see you for another wheel alignment next year some time.

I am thinking of purchasing an adjustable rear bar and possibly front bar for suspension tuning purposes

Thanks for the input you have provided thus far.

Prospect Rd right? I remember taking my Dato 1600 there to get some tyres once, but that was over 10 years ago!

Hopefully you can give me some advice. I need to get a new set of tyres for my FD. Its for street use only so I'm not looking to spend big bucks but I don't want to go cheap either ($150-$200 per tyre?). Currently its fitted with Direnzza D101 225/45/17's.

What would you recommend?

Kumho KU36's seem pretty popular. I spoke to a mechanic who is a family friend and he reckons Sumitomo's are better for about the same price but from what I've read on the FDRX7 forum I'm not so sure about that advice...

cheers, Im now organising a garage>>>12mx7mx3m 4 bay garage for my mazdas
best fun i have had since the last time i drove my beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yokohama S.Drive @$274ea fitted and balanced
they are the best tyre on the market for price
I have gone thru 2x sets on our Corolla Sportivo, about to go for 3rd set
got approx 50,000kms outa each set
85% of those Kms were spent driving between Goolwa and Prospect everyday
constant twistie hills driving!!!!!!!!!
they make the pouring rain fee like the dry
they are the most progressive feeling road tyre,
most tyres grip until they snap and let go,
they give u soo much feedback and let go sooo gradually theyre brilliant
In my opinion theyre better than adrenalins,
the only tyre that compared in the last 10 years was the Dunlop Formula FM901
and the Yoko A539

Kuhmos suck!!!!!!!!!!
but theyre cheap......
if u want cheap get NANKANG NS-IIs @ $195ea fitted n balanced
just as good grip if not better, much better mileage and theyll be cheaper again!!!!!!!!!!
but at $320 difference between cheap(NANGKANG) and good (YOKOHAMA) for a set
if ya tyres last ya 2 years thats less than 50c a day
if they last ya 1yr thats about 85c a day
youd hate to boof ya car coz u were too tight to fork out 85c a day for better tyres
